AK

Few years ago in the Tamil magazine Vikatan, a college student had written about her tour to Rameshwaram. She had written about the temples and beach, and when it was the time to return to her bus to leave for Chennai, as she wrote, " I took a pinch of soil and applied it on my forehead as if it was the vipoothi, praying that I get at least a minute percentage of knowledge, sincereity and simplicity of Dr.Abdul Kalam, who was born in this holy town of Rameshwaram...".

That college girl might have acted somewhat hyper-sentimentally, nevertheless she reflected the mindsets of millions of Indians for whom Dr.Kalam was undoubtedly a Hero.

It is a gifted opportunity to be in a small group listening to his speech -Deepika, Shibu & Madhu were in the audience when Dr.Kalam visited Orlando Hindu Temple last week (Oct-25, Sunday). (See attached pics). Both Shibu & Madhu were very impressed with his brief speech (and perhaps, the significance he attached to students).

PS-II (or was it III?)

Language Barrier

While talking about language barrier, a young Spanish lady narrated this to Dee: "As I was driving with my 7-yr old daughter, the police car coming behind showed blinking lights, which meant they wanted me to pull over. Actually I didn't notice and was driving ahead. The police then honked their horn, which I ignored thinking that it was for something else. I heard their voice in the loud-speaker, which I did not understand anyway, and continued to drive. Minutes later I heard their their loud-speaker blaring again; it was then my 7-yr old daughter got alerted and told me in Spanish: "Mom, they say they are going to shoot at our car tyre if we don't stop..."

Years ago, when we landed in Japan for the first time, Vanishree had to do our 'childhood gesture' (mostly in elementary schools; see picture) to request a waitress in a restaurant for some water! (Today  -Oct-21, is the day we landed in Japan several years ago). Imagine what the waitress would have thought about us! She imitated us trying to do the same sign;  looking at her twisted fingers, she talked to herself something and asked "nani? nani??" (what? what?)

I had my incident in Madrid where I'd gone on a business trip. I'd gone to a nearby shopping mall on a Sunday evening; it was December and was dead cold over there. The mall was crowded with people who were doing shopping as if tomorrow was the End of the world, and there was no signboard for toilet (This is the case in many countries except Japan). I searched here & there but in vain. Asked a couple of men who I thought could understand basic English but they gave me a look as if I came from a different planet and walked away. I kept walking in 'all directions'....... and found an old lady carrying a basket, a mob & a brush, and was in a dirty uniform. "She is it!" I told myself and silently followed her. She walked through some narrow lanes and finally reached a store-room where she kept her basket and mop, and was about to return. There was no toilet though.

Perhaps she was done for the day, and was about to return home. Knowing that she was the last chance for me to get some idea of where the toilet was, I intervened and asked her "Toilet? Toi-let-oo? Resta Rooma?" in several accents & 'dialects'. She blinked her eyes and was moving away, as others did. I was in a hurry, and I didn't want to let her go. I momentarily realized that nothing other than gesture would work! I intervened her again, and instead of 'talking' did an appropriate gesture, which she instantly understood. She then led me to the toilet which was some 200m away from the store-room.

On narrating this to a friend, he asked, laughing out loudly: "What was the gesture you did, by the way?"
"I leave it to your imagination.." said I.

Deepawali

Even as the whole world was debating Obama receiving the Nobel for Peace, I saw news of Obama celebrating Deepawali by lighting 'diya' in Whitehouse. Not just the word 'diya' was new to me, but also some other information I found in Obama's speech. I was under the impression like many that Deepawali is a Hindu festival, celebrated to mark the occasion of killing of Narakasura by Krishna. Obama says it is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists, 'people of some of the great faiths of the world'. Per media reports, Obama becomes the first sitting US President to 'grace the occasion' with a group of Indians in White House.

Doing some search, I found further that North & South India have different reasons for celebrating D. While the southern version refers to Krishna and Narakasura, the Northern version has different hero & villain: Rama and Ravana. Didn't know that D is celebrated as the occasion that marked Rama's return from Sri Lanka to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana. Jains celebrate it as the occasion of their master Mahavira attaining moksha or nirvana. Sikhs have the latest history to mark this occasion -they celebrtae this as the return of their Guru Har Gobindji to Amritsar Golden Temple from imprisonment -he was kept in prison by King Jehangir. Some Buddhists in Nepal also celebrate D, I read.

When I showed Obama speech on a screen among a group of 30 Indian families in here, they weren't impressed. Some of them got instantly patriotic, and asked me why I did not bring Pratibha Patil's speech. (I was worried someone would then ask me "What happened to speech by mu.ka Alagiri..?..m?"). Someone said it was all 'marketing (!) gimmicks' which the US politicians are good at. The other one found the 2-min speech 'unnecessarily' cutting into the next event - which was 'lunch'.

You only see what you believe you see! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuiAW_6XKVM
I could not stop recalling the joy we saw in our good friend Manick's  face when he shared with us his experience of visiting President Obama's inauguration ceremony early this year. (My family & I stayed with him in his palatial house in NY for 4-5 days in Jan 2004 i.e., prior to my transfer to Japan-what a house it is!). Manick wrote a nice article about his personal experience of being at the historic inaugural ceremony in "The Hindu" 29-Jan-2009 edition  http://www.hindu.com/2009/01/29/stories/2009012952630900.htm

(Deepika was impressed with Obama speech for his last couple of lines when he wished all a Happy Diwali; he said "Michelle & I wish you all...." His reference to Michelle even when she wasn't in there was just enough to sweep Deepika off her feet! :-)

Footsteps

Like everyone else, sometime back I too received the below message in a 'Forwarded" mail: (Instead of making me realize how merciful the Lord has been, this one made me recall something quite different; see at the end...)

Footsteps In The Sand

One night a man had a dream.
He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the LORD.
Across the sky flashed scenes from his life.
For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand:
one belonging to him, and the other to the LORD.

When the last scene of his life flashed before him
he looked back, at the footprints in the sand.
He noticed that many times along the path of his life
there was only one set of footprints.
He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times of his life.

This really bothered him and he questioned the LORD about it:
"LORD, you said that once I decided to follow you, you'd walk with me all the way.
But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life
there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed you most you would leave me."

The LORD replied:
"My son, My precious child, I love you and I would never leave you,
During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints,
it was then that I carried you."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Momentarily, Goundamani-Senthil came to my mind......! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHByAtoIs8g&NR=1 Neither Goundamani nor the Lord would have ever imagined that they would be compared to each other in a blog !
