Manicks: Just so we can have a cautionary point of view, Nagaraj, may I?
The American Heart Association (AHA) cautions people NOT to start drinking if they do not already drink alcohol. If you already drink alcohol, do so in moderation.

Drinking MORE alcohol increases other dangers such as alcoholism, high blood pressure, obesity and stroke. Most importantly, it is not possible to predict who might become alcoholic. One can progress from social drinking to alcohol dependence, a state that is characterized by the craving for, loss of control or withdrawal symptoms.

There have been studies showing some association between drinking red wine and reduced mortality due to heart diseases. Others have examined the potential benefits of the COMPONENTS in red wine such as flavonids and other antioxidants (as Nagaraj has pointed out, resveratrol in wine might be available in capsule forms in a few years). Some of these components may be found in other foods such as grapes or red grape juices. Some studies also caution that the association may be due to other lifestyle factors rather than alcohol. Like increased physical activity (as might have been the case in the army where Nagaraj saw the benefits) and a diet high in fruits and vegetables and lower in saturated fats (that means less fried foods - French fries are from Belgium, by the way !!).

No direct comparison trials have been done to determine the specific effect of wine or other alcohol on the risk of developing heart disease or stroke.

Having said all that, let me go and enjoy some good wine (more than one glass) in the company of friends and family at our Thanksgiving Dinner in a couple of hours. Happy Thanksgiving to those here in the USA and Happy Holidays to those of us back in India !!
P.S. Do not drink and drive.

( அது ஏன் அம்மாக்கள் தான் இந்த தடையை அதிகம் விதிக்கிறார்கள் - May be, evolution has an answer, with male species risking drinking may die early leaving the children helpless and therefore female think that it is important to ensure safety of the family - although this may be changing slowly now!).

Profusely apologized to our friends for such a behavior - only to be told by our friends the next day that it was not I (but my then 'would be b-i-l') who broke it!

ADA சைட்டில் “டயபடீஸ் இருந்தாலும் ஸ்வீட் சாப்பிடு; ஒண்ணும் குடி முழுகிப் போகாது” என்கிற ரீதியில் சொல்கிறவர்கள் (” It is one of the myths that those who are diabetic should avoid sweets completely” ) கூட, ஒயினின் டயபடீஸ் எதிர்ப்பு பற்றி மூச்.

Colorless, odorless.

The 'serious Japs' and Saravana Bhavan

A friend of mine had the following to say about Japan:

We visited Japan back in summer of 2005 (5 days on our way to Thailand). We picked Kyoto as our base and stayed with a local family (as paid guests in a very old classic Japanese house). We bought the Japan Rail pass and did mostly day trips. I am sure we did not do complete justice of visiting Japan, but it sure gave us a good flavor of the country. I personally did not care too much for Japan. People were not as warm as some of the other countries we visited. Very few people even smiled at us - which was very intriguing. Later we learned from the host family that it is ingrained in their culture to be very 'serious' as they get into middle and high school levels. Again this is just one data point. Japan was nice, well organized, fast trains, lots of old culture but never clicked for me!

And my response to him was this....

CK Sridhar had referred to Japanese being not so warm.....which is true to some extent in the sense, that you don't get a "Hi! How are you doing?" from a stranger who is absolutely unknown to you, and whom you just happen to see in the parking lot as you get off your car! That's an American custom to say 'hi' to anyone that comes across you.

The Japanese are generally serious, and they value privacy (theirs and yours) even in their limited space where one has to stay close to each other. In trains, where one sits face-to-face with other passengers, they close their eyes and fall into half-sleep, or begin reading a book (which usually comes with a wrap to let others not get distracted by the title).

A comparison of service in restaurants would tell you how customs are different in each country and why the term ''warm' could be subjective...

My daughter would enjoy the individual attention she gets in US restaurants -the waiters would take the order from each individual separately, asking her "What can I get for you, young lady?" ('young lady' was hardly 6 or 7 yr old then!). It is not a custom in US for the dad or mom to place the order for the whole family. The waiters also keep asking you "Is everything fine with you guys?" as & when they cross your table.

In Japan they bow and take your order politely; they don't come near your table once the items are served, except when you call them (in many restaurants by pressing the button in your table); they show up instantly then.

Back in India, in Saravana Bhavan, waiters used to tap the table with their fingers and ask you in a single word "enna?" while taking order. Most of them don't bother to utter even that single word; they simply raise their eyebrows -which interprets as 'enna vENum?..m'?

'Taste' of individuals would vary. I don't like the way waiters in US keep poking their nose even as you enjoy your food with your group. I do not expect/ like someone keep asking me " How is everything?" -all for the extra 15% tip that you must shell out from your pocket at the end! The Japanese style is good; they focus on taking the order & serving you in a timely manner and not intervening in your privacy thereafter. Tipping is unheard of in any restaurants in Japan.

I don't find fault with Saravana Bhavan staff though, whose service is quite OK to me. I don't necessarily expect the waiter to serve me food as if it was the most pleasant thing for him to do! I don't rate service by looking at the 'length' of smile in their face, or the fancy language they use, either!

And then came this message from Suri about modernisation in Saravana Bhavan...

That was a good comparison of the eating-out-experiences. I am not sure how accurate you were with respect to the Saravana Bhavans.

Earlier this year, the weekend following our reunion, Sivashankar had graciously taken a few of us (Suryanarayanan, Vishwakumar & myself) out to dinner, at the Saravana Bhavan  in Mylapore. (Vishwakumar must be a 'regular' at that place, because we were seated fairly quickly in spite
of the big line.) :-)
The place was clean and brightly-lit. There wasn't a necessity for the rapid-fire delivery of the day's menu/specials. They had menu cards. The biggest surprise though was when the waiter took our orders. He tapped it into his blue-tooth-enabled hand-held-device, which apparently sent the info. down to the
kitchen. The info. must have included our seat locations, because a different guy brought our orders, and he knew who had ordered what.

Vishwakumar also pointed out the hierarchy and responsibilities of the service folks. (If I remember correctly, lighter the shade of the uniform, further up the chain of command)

The food was pretty good. That 'sambar vadai' was spectacular. It's making my mouth water just thinking about it. It's lunch time here now, and am feeling very hungry.

Memory

கடைசி மாதங்களில் அவனுக்கும் ஒரு சிலருக்கும் தனி கோச்சிங் எடுத்தது பற்றிப் பேசியவர், “I don't know how he 'managed' to fail" என்றார்.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sozhavarman: I really enjoy the way you felt about all elecronic gadgets. I want to write in Tamil man.

(To borrow Manick's words..."What a country !" ... and what a diversity!!)

Daya: Even I was wondering why there is no mention of / discussion about 'Smitha' while the subject line says "Silk" . Atleast I have company in Santhanam ( or for that matter most of the members wondering silently). Then a Flash ....Oh Subahar is discussing about original Silk & saree & Kancheevaram, and that is the connection ...Was it not Sanjeevi who did that golden, nay colorful touch and became instant hero. It just reminds me of an incident during May 83. It was the day of World cup Finals. I was in Hyderabad in my brother's house. On that day morning our TV failed. Few families (mind you there were couple of beautiful young girls) in the neighbourhood, were dependent on this TV set for watching the grand Finale. Focus shifted on me. After all I have completed 4 years in Electronics & Communication and supposed to know 80% of everything electronics ( TV radio...) So I am supposed to service and make TV set good. (I could not say TV is not my elective subject ) So I did what best I could think of under the given circumstance. I demanded for a screw driver opened the cover of TV set and cleared all the dust inside. I put the cover back and switched the set 'ON' Bravo! It started working normally. None of them believed that I have not done anything. They thought that I had actually serviced (& trying to be modest). Any way we enjoyed the Indian victory thoroughly. (Raghu : See I have serviced a TV in Hyderabad long before you established your "Service" empire!)

Isaac: ((Was it not Sanjeevi who did that golden, nay colorful touch and became instant hero))
It was a guy wearing glasses. Was it that "white" guy who was our senior by 1 or 2 years?
The Tamil posts are interesting and take me back to a time when my only Tamil-speaking friends were SriLankans. It was a bit of a struggle to understand what they were saying, but I think I got it after a while :-)

TKP: Dear Mr Subahar, I have also recollected the first Tamil Movie I have seen in Madras Doordharshan. It was Gemini's Motor Sundaram Pillai .( The name taken from TVS "s Sundaram Motors). I think the first Tamil movie telecasted by Madras Doordharshan was Shivaji's Thillana Mohanambal (in 1975)

AK

Few years ago in the Tamil magazine Vikatan, a college student had written about her tour to Rameshwaram. She had written about the temples and beach, and when it was the time to return to her bus to leave for Chennai, as she wrote, " I took a pinch of soil and applied it on my forehead as if it was the vipoothi, praying that I get at least a minute percentage of knowledge, sincereity and simplicity of Dr.Abdul Kalam, who was born in this holy town of Rameshwaram...".

That college girl might have acted somewhat hyper-sentimentally, nevertheless she reflected the mindsets of millions of Indians for whom Dr.Kalam was undoubtedly a Hero.

It is a gifted opportunity to be in a small group listening to his speech -Deepika, Shibu & Madhu were in the audience when Dr.Kalam visited Orlando Hindu Temple last week (Oct-25, Sunday). (See attached pics). Both Shibu & Madhu were very impressed with his brief speech (and perhaps, the significance he attached to students).

PS-II (or was it III?)

Language Barrier

While talking about language barrier, a young Spanish lady narrated this to Dee: "As I was driving with my 7-yr old daughter, the police car coming behind showed blinking lights, which meant they wanted me to pull over. Actually I didn't notice and was driving ahead. The police then honked their horn, which I ignored thinking that it was for something else. I heard their voice in the loud-speaker, which I did not understand anyway, and continued to drive. Minutes later I heard their their loud-speaker blaring again; it was then my 7-yr old daughter got alerted and told me in Spanish: "Mom, they say they are going to shoot at our car tyre if we don't stop..."

Years ago, when we landed in Japan for the first time, Vanishree had to do our 'childhood gesture' (mostly in elementary schools; see picture) to request a waitress in a restaurant for some water! (Today  -Oct-21, is the day we landed in Japan several years ago). Imagine what the waitress would have thought about us! She imitated us trying to do the same sign;  looking at her twisted fingers, she talked to herself something and asked "nani? nani??" (what? what?)

I had my incident in Madrid where I'd gone on a business trip. I'd gone to a nearby shopping mall on a Sunday evening; it was December and was dead cold over there. The mall was crowded with people who were doing shopping as if tomorrow was the End of the world, and there was no signboard for toilet (This is the case in many countries except Japan). I searched here & there but in vain. Asked a couple of men who I thought could understand basic English but they gave me a look as if I came from a different planet and walked away. I kept walking in 'all directions'....... and found an old lady carrying a basket, a mob & a brush, and was in a dirty uniform. "She is it!" I told myself and silently followed her. She walked through some narrow lanes and finally reached a store-room where she kept her basket and mop, and was about to return. There was no toilet though.

Perhaps she was done for the day, and was about to return home. Knowing that she was the last chance for me to get some idea of where the toilet was, I intervened and asked her "Toilet? Toi-let-oo? Resta Rooma?" in several accents & 'dialects'. She blinked her eyes and was moving away, as others did. I was in a hurry, and I didn't want to let her go. I momentarily realized that nothing other than gesture would work! I intervened her again, and instead of 'talking' did an appropriate gesture, which she instantly understood. She then led me to the toilet which was some 200m away from the store-room.

On narrating this to a friend, he asked, laughing out loudly: "What was the gesture you did, by the way?"
"I leave it to your imagination.." said I.

Deepawali

Even as the whole world was debating Obama receiving the Nobel for Peace, I saw news of Obama celebrating Deepawali by lighting 'diya' in Whitehouse. Not just the word 'diya' was new to me, but also some other information I found in Obama's speech. I was under the impression like many that Deepawali is a Hindu festival, celebrated to mark the occasion of killing of Narakasura by Krishna. Obama says it is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists, 'people of some of the great faiths of the world'. Per media reports, Obama becomes the first sitting US President to 'grace the occasion' with a group of Indians in White House.

Doing some search, I found further that North & South India have different reasons for celebrating D. While the southern version refers to Krishna and Narakasura, the Northern version has different hero & villain: Rama and Ravana. Didn't know that D is celebrated as the occasion that marked Rama's return from Sri Lanka to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana. Jains celebrate it as the occasion of their master Mahavira attaining moksha or nirvana. Sikhs have the latest history to mark this occasion -they celebrtae this as the return of their Guru Har Gobindji to Amritsar Golden Temple from imprisonment -he was kept in prison by King Jehangir. Some Buddhists in Nepal also celebrate D, I read.

When I showed Obama speech on a screen among a group of 30 Indian families in here, they weren't impressed. Some of them got instantly patriotic, and asked me why I did not bring Pratibha Patil's speech. (I was worried someone would then ask me "What happened to speech by mu.ka Alagiri..?..m?"). Someone said it was all 'marketing (!) gimmicks' which the US politicians are good at. The other one found the 2-min speech 'unnecessarily' cutting into the next event - which was 'lunch'.

You only see what you believe you see! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuiAW_6XKVM
I could not stop recalling the joy we saw in our good friend Manick's  face when he shared with us his experience of visiting President Obama's inauguration ceremony early this year. (My family & I stayed with him in his palatial house in NY for 4-5 days in Jan 2004 i.e., prior to my transfer to Japan-what a house it is!). Manick wrote a nice article about his personal experience of being at the historic inaugural ceremony in "The Hindu" 29-Jan-2009 edition  http://www.hindu.com/2009/01/29/stories/2009012952630900.htm

(Deepika was impressed with Obama speech for his last couple of lines when he wished all a Happy Diwali; he said "Michelle & I wish you all...." His reference to Michelle even when she wasn't in there was just enough to sweep Deepika off her feet! :-)

Footsteps

Like everyone else, sometime back I too received the below message in a 'Forwarded" mail: (Instead of making me realize how merciful the Lord has been, this one made me recall something quite different; see at the end...)

Footsteps In The Sand

One night a man had a dream.
He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the LORD.
Across the sky flashed scenes from his life.
For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand:
one belonging to him, and the other to the LORD.

When the last scene of his life flashed before him
he looked back, at the footprints in the sand.
He noticed that many times along the path of his life
there was only one set of footprints.
He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times of his life.

This really bothered him and he questioned the LORD about it:
"LORD, you said that once I decided to follow you, you'd walk with me all the way.
But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life
there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed you most you would leave me."

The LORD replied:
"My son, My precious child, I love you and I would never leave you,
During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints,
it was then that I carried you."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Momentarily, Goundamani-Senthil came to my mind......! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHByAtoIs8g&NR=1 Neither Goundamani nor the Lord would have ever imagined that they would be compared to each other in a blog !

(9-Oct-2009 issue)

The cattle class

(Madhu fascinated with KKarisal cattle)
One would think "what a nasty comment it was!" in response to Shashi Tharoor's (India's State Minister for External Affairs) reference to economy class flight travels as 'cattle class'. Does it not reflect the mindset of the elite who have come to occupy the seat of power without any real understanding of the masses?

Reading the story in detail would, however, show that we have been over-reacting to a comment made jokingly. When a reporter asked S.T if he would travel 'cattle class', he replied, repeating the same phrase, "I would travel cattle class in solidarity with all the holy cows". A debate instantly ensues as to who the 'cows' are! S.T. has clarified that he was only commenting on airlines that herd us in like cattle, and not made fun of economy class travelers. (Glad that our PM has come to his rescue).

Apparently, using analogies involving animals like dog, monkey & cow is risky -when people fail to catch the metaphoric intention, but rather get upset on being 'compared' to animals! Nobody is an exception. When I used to open up an electrical appliance (VCR, camera etc) and leave it in open condition for a couple of days either because I didn't know how to fix it, or as I lost the charm in working with them... I often hear Deepika say "இதென்ன, ’ஏதோ’ கையில் பூமாலை கிடைச்ச மாதிரி....”.

Few years ago when Mu.Ka was reinstalling Kannagi statue, Ananda Vikatan had commented that politicians were playing with Kannagi as if she was a 'teddy bear'.Mu.Ka went strongly against AV as it compared Kannagi with a 'bear doll'! (If you thought Mu.Ka was good enough to understand உவமையணி, he proved you wrong!)

The term cattle rang a bell to me -that Eisntein had used it to refer to atheists. Did a little search and found that famous quote: "The ideals which have always shone before me and filled me with the joy of living are goodness, beauty, and truth. To make a goal of comfort or happiness has never appealed to me; a system of ethics built on this basis would be sufficient only for a herd of cattle". That was Albert Einstein who looked at religious guys like a herd of cattle.

Even when I'm on this topic, I recall some interesting events that involved my friend Ponraj. But I choose to keep quiet and not write about his reactions then... Well, Let the sleeping dog sleep! :-)

Japan's historic election

Japan saw its historic election recently. The party that ruled the country for more than 55 consecutive years (LDP) took a severe beating and paved way for the opposition party (DPJ) to form the government, in what was referred to as the first ever 'real election'. Being a nation that closely follows the foot-steps of USA, Japan was only 'quick' to follow the "Change we can" mantra of Obama. Or, it could be said that the global recession took its toll in Japan politics too.

Things that caught my attention:

  • The DPJ leader Hatoyama's election manifesto had several 'populist' proposals that would make our Indian politicians look 'ju-ju-be'. Here are some:
--elimination of expressway tolls (Till now one paid Y24 (0.27cents or Rs.13) per
km for driving in highways ; unbelievable for those in USA who drive for free).
--pay Y26,000/month/child up to age 15 'to boost economy'. A family with 3
children below 15 will 'earn' roughly US$ 10,000 per annum! -quite unbelievable!
--elimination of 5% sales tax (unlike in India, there is no sales/purchase without this
5% sales tax. Elimination of this means a direct saving of 5% on your expenses).
--free high school education (Unlike in USA, high school education is NOT free in
Japan; till now it cost about US$ 3,500/year in public schools).

  • Japan's new Prime Minister Hatoyama is the 4th consecutive PM whose dd/grand-dad was also PM earlier! (In a coincidence, the grandfathers of Hatoyama and his opponent Aso were also fighting the elections in the 50s; now it was the grandsons' turn.

  • There were no electronic voting machines. In the paper-ballot, the voter should write the name of the candidate of his/her choice. (yes, 'hand-write'!). As the Japanese characters have complicated & numerous strokes, I asked what if the name wasn't written correctly. Nobody envisaged such a situation, thanks to Japan's 99%+ literacy rate.

Japan's historic election went without any disturbance to the public -the elections were held on a Sunday (as usual), and there weren't any loudspeakers or processions or public meetings on street corners or mega-size posters or garlanding statues etc. Yeh Mera India!

Venkatramani. A very nice guy from Erode -who had never been to a cinema thaeter in Chennai in all those years when he was in the hostel. In 3rd block we used to pull our cots to the balcony at nights to sleep 'outdoor'. At morning 6, I would be awake on hearing a 'ding-ding-ding' noise; V.Ramani, in his clean white dhoti, would be chanting some mantras and doing "Santhia vanthanam" , (the noise was what he would make when 'ding-dinging' the spoon inside a tumbler half-filled with water). Unmindful of my weird look, he would patiently explain me about it.

He was one of the 2 guys that I've seen in Guindy who cried uncontrollably after having done poorly at the semester exam! 2nd year 2nd semester we all had a tough paper; when I returned to the hostel, I found V.Ramani sobbing and blaming himself for being such an irresponsible guy(!), and for being ungrateful to his uncle who financed his studies (his father was no more). When I told him that going by the efforts he took, he would probably not fail, V.Ramani wouldn't agree. He started crying more saying he had raised high such hopes about him in his friends! Sensing it was an 'opportunity', I invited him for a bet -if he would pass, he should go with me to watch a movie. Though he wwasn't in a mind for any kind of bet then, I made him agree for that bet finally.

The results came and alas! V.Ramani passed!! I got more excited than him! Being a soft-spoken guy, he was begging .... begging me to reconsider the bet. But little did he know then that Subahar could be ruthless at times! :-) I took him to Devi complex for "Nenjaththaik kiLLaathE" (Mahendran's; Suhashini's debut). That was the one & only movie VRamani watched in all those 5 years. I knew that soon after 1984 he moved to Bombay, where his elder brother was working (in Godrej?). It is only a surprise that VRamani had chosen 'business' as his profession....

Welcome (back) to Florida!

(Posting by Dee)
As we landed at Los Angeles after a long flight from Osaka, custom-cleared my check-in bags and I took them to United Airlines -which refused to take them though I'd routed my bags up to Orlando. "We won't accept bags if the transit time exceeds 12 hours; you go to Asiana airlines (Osaka-LA carrier)". Asiana's counter remained closed. Luckily Selva's mini-van had enough space to carry my 6 check-in bags (and 3 hand-carrys).

Reached home at 8 pm by taxi from Orlando airport. Wanted to get something to eat... my car wouldn't start. (Battery had 'slept' for 75 days; we talked about carrying a jump-start cable from Japan, but forgot it in the last minute). Called Lokesh, he was not in town. Namrata would not understand what I was talking about! Seshu suggested to call AAA -which accepted me as a member by phone (@US$ 62/yr) and sent a person.

Made udon noodles for children, and drove to Winn Dixie to buy some groceries. Came back home only to see that I left behind one bag in the shop. Drove again and brought it back.

The AAA staff called me to confirm my address; she said my membership card will be valid up to Oct-16, 2010. "Nope! I don't need it beyond 2010 June, by then I should have moved back to Japan!"

Obara -the Japanese village

Visiting a Japanese friend's family in their village, having a BBQ lunch, taking a hot spring bath, spending the night in their village home ... and proceeding, the next day, to Yubara, one of the Best Hot springs in Japan kept us busy in this year's O-bon holidays when my mom was with us here in Japan.
The rest in Madhu's & Shibu's words...
Madhu: Long time, no see! Yesterday my whole family took our Grandma and went to see Chiho’s family at their grandparents’ farm in Okayama. It was really wonderful to see our friends after such a long time! All of us had grown up and it was really different, but in a way also the same. We did the same things that we did so many years ago, fish lobster, watch The Book House, go to onsens, and it still felt like a new experience! Mr. and Mrs. Sugiyama treated us like we were family, and they had even put up our picture from four years ago in a frame! The experience was like re-uniting with family, actually. We had barbeque, evening tea, and onigiris! All of us slept heavenly, in the tatami rooms they had provided so generously.

The next day we all had breakfast together, watched the koi , packed all our luggage, took pictures, dragging the farewell as long as we could. It was too sad to say goodbye, it felt like we had just arrived and already we needed to go. All the while, something, everything was familiar, and it wasn’t until we had come home that I realized what it was like. There isn’t a single word to describe it, but you know when you visit your relatives in a different country, and when you have to leave, it feels all too sudden and too soon? Meeting old friends and staying with them is like being with family. You all do everything together, you all clean up after one another, and you all grow up with each other. The sorrow of leaving was so great, even the skies felt our sadness and cried. It was a rainy morning, but the thought of meeting Kozue-san, Chiho, Shu, Takashi-san, and their grandparents again next year was enough to lighten our day up by the afternoon.

Shibu: Don’t we all have times where we feel like traveling to a different world that’s completely isolated from our everyday hassles and encumbrances? Little children fantasize about going to outer space, while many adults working in municipal parts of the world dream about relaxing in Hawaii. Fortunately, I was once again embraced with the opportunity of being captivated by another part of Japan that I believe all foreigners should put on their to-do list. I am referring to the mountain-side villages of Obara, and Yubara, which are both in the Okayama prefecture of Japan.
It is a known fact that Japan is a well-developed and technologically advanced nation that never ceases to amaze the world with its electronics. Many Westerners immediately perceive Japan as a city-dominated island, where endless bullet trains and subways are ubiquitous. What they might not realize is that 70 percent of Japan consists of mountains. I believe that is the “real” Japan.

We are very good friends with a Japanese engineer, Takeshi-san, and his family. Takeshi-san’s parents live in a mountain-side village called Obara. My family and I have been there twice before, and had the great opportunity to go there once more last Wednesday. It was just splendid to enjoy the air outside, which was a temporary cessation to the busy factory atmosphere that permeates the Takasago air. We had a nice barbeque outdoors, and ate till we could eat no more. I also had an interesting time attempting to catch lobsters at a nearby pond, with Takeshi-san’s children, Chi-ho and Shuu. At night we went to a local hot spring, which is a must in Japan as well. We stayed over their house for the night, and by the morning, the family and our family had already established many fond memories within the span of barely one day. As we left that morning, Takeshi-san’s wife, Kosue-san, had engaged in a tear-fest!

After we said our heartfelt (temporary) goodbyes to Takeshi-san’s family, we went on our way to Yubara, another town near along the mountains. This town is famous for its open-air Hot Springs, where one bathe immediately cleanses out your body and soul simultaneously. The Hot Springs are unique as they are completely outdoors, while it is also right besides the road! As my mom and dad bathed in Yubara for a long time, Madhu, my grandmother, and I took a stroll along the small roads of Yubara. After my parents returned, we went to Hiruzen, a town famous for breeding cows. We had a hearty lunch at a restaurant there, while we stopped by a nearby “Michi-no-eki” ( “street market”?) to take a rest before resuming our journey back home.

Well, if you think that was a captivating and mind-blowing trip, you better get over here pretty fast. It’s about time you lose yourself in the “real” Japan.

25

Blood donation..."

சுபாராணி “let's have this kind of get togethers often" என்று எழுதியது ஒரு initial euphoria மட்டுமில்லாமல் அடுத்த get-together விரைவிலேயே நடக்க வேண்டும்; அதில் கலந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும்.

Kenosis

KENOSIS in Greek means "self-emptying" -said the pamphlet. Like "Art of Living", the title KENOSIS thus attracted me, when I came to know of a lecture by Acharya Brahamrishi Kirit Bhaiji ((I'm trying to figure out what his real -'first'- name is, among these 4 words) in Kobe, arranged by a group of Indians in Kobe. The Guru is widely known for his KENOSIS programs-aimed at "emptying the Mind"- which regularly come in Zee TV, as I was told.

When I arrived at the ISS hall at Kobe at 1:50 pm for the 2:00pm program, the hall was 'empty' (symbolically?) with just one Non-SouthIndian lady munching her lunch. In the small hall to accommodate 80-100 people, I saw mats laid on the floor, reminding me that there might be practical meditation sessions as well. The program started at 2:40 when one by one gradually assembled. I chose an aisle seat in the last row, to be able to whisk myself away in case the lecture is in Hindi (or any Indian language other than Tamil).

The guru spoke in excellent English (I learned later that he was a CA by profession, educated in UK). The first part of the program was a speech by him on the topic *Key to Success", which was interesting and appealing as he was emphasizing on -among others- 'burning desire' 'winning edge' and 'perseverence' etc. Sounded more like an inspiring Management Guru or an experienced & successful business personality. Finished his speech with a punch-line statement "Don't count the days, make your days count". I liked his speech, though at times I was worried if I will get my mind filled with more worries rather than getting it emptied. Part of the reason could be that other then being a sole non-Hindi speaking guy, I was also the sole non-Businessman, a salaried-man in the crowd !

The second part had meditation practices involving breathing techniques. With all my questions regarding the health benefits of breathing techniques remaining unanswered, I did follow what was said, and did meditate for more than an hour. At the end of the meditation session, many expressed 'feeling great' with one person saying that she could see blueish things when she was practising. The guru said it was just a beginning, that she was on the right track, and that she would see 'everything white' as she progresses. I didn't see or feel anything except that when I closed my eyes, I had a tough time trying to keep myself awake! I'm not sure if the health benefits of meditation have been verified and certified by authentic sources, though meditation might have a profound psychological impact (placebo effect?) on the individuals who religiously practice it.

[A little 'googling' tells me that Kenosis is a Greek term associated with theology, widely quoted in Christianity, and there is also an institute based at Arizona, USA focussing on meditation -I believe this Bhaiji has no links with any of them].
